Licensing
gomddoc is dual-licensed. Noncommercial use is free under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0, and commercial use is covered by a separate commercial licence from Monolithic Lab. These terms have applied since 16 June 2026.
The source code is public on GitHub. You can read it, build it and study it. The licence decides what you may use it for.
Free for noncommercial use
If your purpose is noncommercial, the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0 covers you with no paperwork and no fee. The licence names two groups explicitly.
Personal uses
Personal use for research, experiment and testing for the benefit of public knowledge, personal study, private entertainment, hobby projects, amateur pursuits or religious observance, all without any anticipated commercial application.
Noncommercial organizations
Charitable organizations, educational institutions, public research organizations, public safety or health organizations, environmental protection organizations and government institutions, regardless of how they are funded.
An open-source project's documentation, a homelab wiki or a thesis site all fit here.
Commercial use needs a licence
Any use that is not a noncommercial purpose as defined above is commercial. LICENSE-COMMERCIAL.md gives these examples, and the list is not exhaustive:
- Using gomddoc in or for a for-profit business, product or service
- Hosting gomddoc as part of a paid or revenue-generating offering
- Internal use by a commercial organization in support of its business
The third case covers most companies. An internal engineering handbook served by gomddoc is commercial use, even though nobody pays to read it.
Pricing
The commercial licence is priced per deployment, not per seat. The number of readers, writers and requests has no effect on the price. Terms are tailored to the deployment, so a single internal docs site and a fleet of customer-facing sites are quoted differently.

FAQ
Our company maintains an open-source project. Do we need a licence for its docs site? Write to us and describe the project. Documentation for a genuinely open-source project is a case we want to support.
Can we evaluate gomddoc before buying? Yes. Try it on your own content, then sort out the licence before your team depends on it in production.
Can we modify the source?
Yes. PolyForm Noncommercial allows changes and new works for any permitted purpose. If you distribute copies, include the licence terms and the Required Notice line. A commercial licence removes the noncommercial restriction on top of that.
Does the commercial licence unlock extra features? No. It is the same binary, the same repository and the same feature set. There is no paid edition and nothing held back.
Is gomddoc open source? The source is publicly available, but PolyForm Noncommercial is not an OSI-approved open-source licence, because it restricts commercial use.
